Where Proven Hunting Genetics
Meet Modern Detection Performance

A Natural Bridge Between Two Working Dog Worlds

At HCK our mission is simple: develop dogs with the natural instinct, drive and resilience required to excel in the most demanding detection environments.

Our program is built on the traditional development of high-caliber hunting dogs, emphasizing both genetic drive and off-switch stability. We select and produce dogs that exhibit strong prey and hunt drive with clear-headed focus and sustained engagement, while maintaining the ability to regulate and remain composed and under control. This duality—drive with an off-switch—is a critical trait in reliable hunting dogs.

The disciplines of hunting and detection dogs are more closely related than many realize. Both rely heavily on the same behaviors:

  • relentless hunt

  • scenting ability

  • environmental soundness

  • endurance and resilience

  • problem solving intelligence

At HCK, we leverage this connection to produce dogs with strong genetics and the natural drive required for detection work. While genetics form the foundation, we place equal emphasis on the mental and physical conditioning of both sire and dam. Our husbandry program is intentionally designed and executed. We believe it plays a critical role in developing dogs that are not only capable, but consistent and dependable.

Here in the US and around the world, ensuring the safety of crowds at large event venues such as sporting events, festivals, and campaign rallies are top of the mind for homeland security and local officials alike.  Only Vapor Wake certified detection dogs have the capability required for this level of detection and protection.

At Hay Creek Kennel, our role is to develop the candidate Vapor Wake dog both physically and mentally to be ready to be put into service.  Four to five days out of the week, our dogs are taken to a variety of locations to work and hone their individual strengths.  Central to our development program is the concept of "confidence through accomplishment." We believe that by providing dogs with opportunities to succeed and achieve, we can boost their confidence and strengthen their bond with their human companions or handlers. Through our unique approach, we aim to provide the most capable dogs to meet the needs of current national security infrastructure in response to emerging threats.

Staying left of boom.

The Method™ The next evolution in dog training.

Our training system is based on the belief that communication and understanding are key to a successful relationship between dogs and humans.  Our seminars aim to create a strong, iron-clad relationship between humans and dogs.

“I have been training dogs for over 25 years, and built my career in establishing the Search and Rescue K9 program at the U.S. Border Patrol, as well as training dog teams for special projects/missions. I have seen thousands of handlers and dogs. Sonny stands out as an exceptional trainer not only because he has mastered many of the technical aspects of handling a dog, but he fosters an understanding with dogs like I have not seen before. When he began his breeding program he did extensive research to ensure the highest quality of breeding standards and uses his training expertise to raise extremely desirable and reliable detection K9 prospects. He is a true professional and he has dedicated his life to the professional field of dog training and breeding. Sonny has a terrific understanding of the drives of dogs and how to build on those drives to match the task at hand. Bottom line, he is honorable and will not sell a dog that is not suited for the job. Sonny has my highest recommendation as both a breeder and trainer and I can’t wait to get another pup from him.”
